Preproduction is key
‘If success depends on accurate preparation, failure without that preparation is a fact.’ Most unforced errors can be mitigated with thorough preproduction. ‘The more effort is invested in preproduction, the clearer the vision becomes on set, granting us all more creative freedom.’ From the interpretation of the script Ties creates a mood board throughout the feeling he gets from it, regardless of its budget with the thoughts behind it: ‘Deleting ideas is much easier than creating them.’ As he and the director engage in a stylistic exchange, he imposes rules to outline the parameters within which the style will thrive.

Sprezzatura
The ‘perfect imperfection’ resonates deeply with Ties as he interprets the beauty of this Italian word. He often invokes sprezzatura when guiding both the crew and himself during camera operations. Particularly in CGI-heavy shoots, he tends to introduce imperfections to enhance the authenticity of movement.

Green screen
Over the years, Ties specialized in green screen setups, constructing numerous setups while maintaining a close relationship with the postproduction crew. This approach allowed him to learn from the mistakes and assumptions often made during (pre-) production. With dozens of green screen productions under his belt, Ties possesses a wealth of knowledge regarding the right setups, resulting in significant time and cost savings during postproduction.
